President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday appointed Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission and also included five new national commissioners for the electoral body.
Their appointments were consequently approved at the first Council of State meeting to be presided over by President Buhari. This development was announced to State House correspondents by Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State after the meeting.
The newly installed national commissioners include: Mrs. Amina Zakari (North-West); Dr. Anthonia Okoosi-Simbine, North Central, Alhaji Baba Shettima Arfo (North-East); Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Lecky (South-South) and Mr. Soyebi Adedeji Solomon (South-West). The South-East is believed to be left out because it still has a sitting national commissioner.Yakubu, a professor of political history and international studies, was Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
He is an expert in guerrilla warfare, terrorism and counter-terrorism.
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu was an Assistant Secretary, Finance and Administration, at the 2014 National Conference under the Jonathan led administration. He is also the first and only first class graduate of history from the North till date,who was on secondment from the Nigeria Defense Academy where he was a lecturer to the Federal Ministry of Education.
