Football is no doubt the most popular and celebrated sporting event in Nigeria. The passion and support Nigerians have for the round leather game is beyond comparison.
Nigerian football since inception has witnessed many triumphant and dark moments in her football history but one of its disastrous moments is a match played in Accra five years before her independence.
First day of June
1955 has always remained a historical day in Nigerian football. It was a day
Nigerian football team then known as the Red Devils were ripped apart in the City of
Accra as they were mercilessly trashed by the
Gold Coast team (Present day, Ghana) in what has been tagged as
Nigeria’s worst defeat in her football history.
Right from the kick off whistle, the Gold Coast team showed
they meant business scoring their first
goal in the second minute of the game, more goals soon followed and the first half of the game had the
Nigerian team trailing by 6 goals to nil.
The Red devils came back stronger in the second half of
the game with the intent of saving their face but were thwarted by the
solid defence of the Gold Coast team. They could only watch helplessly as the
ravaging Gold Coast team scored the 7th and final goal of the game casting the red devils into the hell of defeat. Till date, that match has remained Nigeria’s heaviest defeat in football history.
