MELBOURNE-Seventh seed Angelique Kerber of Germany stunned top-seeded Serena
Williams, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to win her first grand slam title in the Australian Open women’s final on
Saturday.
The defeat stalled Williams' ambition of equaling Steffi Graf's record as the
Open-era leader in major singles titles with 22.
28-year old Kerber, who just marked her 14th year as a
pro, was appearing in her first major final and there was no better moment for her than the shocking victory over favourite,Serena Williams. she is also the first German to win a major singles title since Steffi Graf at the 1999 French Open.
“She
taught me actually that I’m on a good way and try to believe in
myself,” said Kerber.
