The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, (LASEPA), yesterday, has shut down no fewer than 53 churches, mosques and hotels across the state over alleged noise pollution and other offences detrimental to the environment.

According to the state government, some residential areas have been converted to worship centers, disturbing the peace of neighbours and  have also been constituting nuisance to residents of the state.

The exercise, headed by the General Manager of the agency, Adebola Shabi was conducted after complaints from residents over disturbances caused by the shut buildings.

According to Adebola, the action had to be taken after so many petitions from residents which made it seem the agency hasn't been doing its duties. He further explained that the sealed areas worship centres generated more than the lawful decibel of noise stipulated for different times of the day and night.

He also explained that some of the closed locations had been served abatement notices beforehand but failed to comply, he also added that most of the noise making worship centres were make shift structures and the level of noise they generate calls for serious regulations.

Adebola, however stated that the compliance level was increasing and more Lagosians now understand the harmful effects of noise pollution and worship centres now comply with the regulations of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA.
