Tanzanian's newly elected President, John Magufuli, did something rather unusual for someone of his position in the capital city of Dar es Salaam.
The President who was dressed casually, swept and picked up rubbish from the streets alongside hundreds of residents in a public environment sanitation operation.

The sanitation scheme was put up by the President to replace Independence day celebrations. President Magufuli cancelled the routine independence day celebrations which includes a military parade and concert, saying it was a lavish ceremony and would be a shame to spend huge amounts of money while the country needs to be rid of the serious cholera outbreak affecting the people.

Thousands of Tanzanians also followed the President's example as they cleaned up their streets and tidied up their environments.
According to reports, the move is part of the President's symbolic promise to tackle corruption. It is also the first time Tanzania hasn't held celebrations to mark its independence from Britain.
John Magufuli ,aged 56 is also known as "The Bulldozer" and has gained popularity for his unusual zeal for austerity and hatred for corruption and waste.
